The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the ASEAN Secretariat jointly organised the ASEAN-ESCAP Joint Capacity Building Webinar on “Strengthening Railway Transport in ASEAN and Beyond” on 14 – 15 September 2021 via video conference.
This objective of the webinar was to provide a platform for ASEAN Members of SWG-SKRL to discuss with ESCAP and railways experts on key issues for promoting rail transport connectivity and interoperability in ASEAN and beyond in the times of pandemic.
The ESCAP secretariat also presented its work on smart railway solutions and digitalization of railways under the United Nations development account project on Transport and Trade Connectivity in the Age of Pandemics which has an objective to develop contactless, collaborative, and seamless solutions to preserve connectivity.
The outcomes of the webinar will help to identify priority areas and recommendations for (a) the development of implementation framework for seamless operation of SKRL; (b) establishing an institutional mechanism for enhancing interoperability among ASEAN railway; and (c) related capacity building support to ASEAN railways.
