The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the International Transport Forum (ITF) at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), in cooperation with the ASEAN secretariat, organised a webinar on Preserving Transport Connectivity and Building Freight Transport Resilience in ASEAN.

This webinar provided a platform for ASEAN Member States to exchange information on transport policy response to the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, with a focus on cross-border freight transport operations. Discussion outcomes helped identify priority areas for regional cooperation among ASEAN countries that could be further supported by ESCAP, the rest of the UN system and the ITF.

The results of the discussions guides ESCAP’s work on helping the region “build back better” and shift to a new, more sustainable transport system in the post-COVID-19 world in line with the ESCAP Framework on Socio-Economic Response to COVID-19 and using the current UN-wide initiatives, such as the UNDA project on Transport and trade connectivity in the age of pandemics: UN solutions for contactless, seamless and collaborative transport and trade. The discussion outcomes also contribute to the ITF’s ongoing discussions with its Member Countries on transport policy responses to COVID-19, as well as the identification of priority areas as countries start to move towards their recovery phases.
